I Am Very Sad To Tell You

I have observed that school bullying is directly and inextricably linked to family education. The imbalance of power within families is also reflected in school bullying. This work aims to explore what kind of power strips adolescents of their sense of closeness to their families when facing bullying. Drawing from my own experiences and family history, I interviewed 54 individuals who had experienced bullying under relevant online topics. Ultimately, I used performance art as the primary medium to interpret and transform these events.

China's transition from a disciplinary society to a achievement society, which has embedded achievement-driven values within education. When confronting school bullying, some parents view adolescents' resistance to school as a failure to realize self-worth, unable to genuinely empathize with their struggles. Within this social context, bullied youth lose their power to speak out. Compared to family, they increasingly seek validation from online peers.

As a creator with only a background in photography, this project was developed while I was learning about performance art. During the initial phase, when I lacked a thorough understanding the history of performance art, I inevitably created some works that resembled others' forms. However, six months of continuous study deepened my comprehension of performance art, enabling me to think more independently about the relationships between materials, expressive language, spaces, and events. At the same time, I also recognized that the expressive methods of performance art extend beyond the confrontational, sensory-shock-oriented approaches of early avant-garde movements. Instead, they can explore bodily concepts through an understanding of expressive language and spatial context. The project is ongoing.
